UL 62368-1: Ensuring the safety of industrial computer products

CE, FCC, and UKCA certification logos are a familiar sight on electronic products. Those badges certify the electronic product’s EMC compliance in the European, American, and British markets. But there is another mark, the UL mark, which shows an extra level of product quality that goes beyond the industry standard requirements.

What is UL certification?

UL is the mark of certification issued by Underwriters Laboratories Inc.. UL is the successor to the National Board of Fire Underwriters’ Electrical Bureau, which was established in 1894 in the wake of a spate of major fires caused by electrical equipment and wiring in the early 1890s. Today, UL provides testing, inspection, certification, and advisory services for global products. It is a third-party, independent professional organization dedicated to public safety, aiming to create a safer world for consumers. In the United States, UL is a trusted symbol of product safety. For global manufacturers, UL is one of the most authoritative and credible certification bodies. Obtaining UL certification signifies a commitment by the company to provide consumers with safety-focused and quality-assured products.

Greater safety and reliability are paramount for industries that rely heavily on industrial computers to power automation in harsh industrial environments and automated factories. To provide the highest level of assurance against the risk of product failure, UL has extended its electronic equipment safety testing standards based on the IEC 62368-1 requirements for information and communication technology audio-visual equipment. The requirements for IEC 62368-1, developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), are conducted during the product design phase and are based on the principles of hazard-based safety engineering (HBSE). HBSE requires that under the premise of protecting equipment users, the product should ensure safety when operators come into contact with it, both during normal operation and in case of failure, to prevent electrical hazards that could lead to electric shock or burns. It also emphasizes safe use in foreseeable environments, preventing any harm to personnel or property. This principle suggests utilizing a system safety analysis during product design: first, identifying potential sources of hazards and the paths through which they may be transmitted to users and then proposing and implementing appropriate protection measures. Industrial computers designed according to HBSE principles and passing the UL 62368-1 testing are equipped with safety protection measures, ensuring their reliability and safety in use and bringing more confidence to enterprise users.

Types of UL certification

UL’s product certifications can be categorized based on the product attributes:

  • UL Listed:
    This is the most well-known UL certification service, applicable to complete products. The UL Listed Mark on the product indicates that the manufacturer’s pre-production samples have been tested and certified by UL according to recognized safety standards in the United States. Under reasonable and foreseeable conditions, these products will not cause fires, electrical leakage, or related hazards.
  • UL Recognized Component:
    This service primarily certifies and tests components or non-finished products that will be used in future products or systems applying for UL Listed. UL Recognized Component covers millions of components, including plastics, wires, circuit boards, and various parts used in different types of products, as well as larger components like motors or power supplies.
  • UL Classified:
    Products are evaluated based on their specific purposes, including specific hazard ranges or circumstances. Most UL Classified products are not intended for consumer use but are used in industrial or commercial applications. Generally, products that apply for UL Classified are building materials or industrial instruments.

Is UL certification recognized in other regions?

UL certification in the United States is voluntary, and manufacturers choose whether or not they send their products to UL for testing and certification. Unlike There is no specific regulation requiring products to have the UL logo. In North America, UL and cUL certifications are common. If the UL logo has “c” and “US” written on the left and right sides, respectively, it means the product complies with both American and Canadian standards. In Europe, the EN 62368-1 standard is used. In other regions, the CB international system based on IEC recognition allows products to obtain CB certificates through testing and approval from a single certification body, simplifying the process for multiple applications. Currently, CB certificates are recognized in more than 50 countries worldwide, including Japan, China, South Korea, France, Germany, Denmark, Finland, and other countries. This certification system enables products to enter different markets and comply with safety requirements in a more straightforward manner.

The DX-1200 is built to satisfy the widest range of industrial application requirements, so it includes a rich selection of native I/O interfaces, and supports optional extra I/O, such as LAN, M12, DIO, and COM, through the addition of Cincoze exclusive modules. For application environments that require high-speed transmission, the DX-1200 can be equipped with up to 4× 10Gbps LAN for the rapid delivery of large images and files. To achieve multiple network connections and reduce wire clutter, up to 8× PoE can be installed, providing both data and power through the network cable. And to meet the rapidly increasing demand for wireless networking in industrial applications, the DX-1200 provides one M.2 Key E slot and two Mini PCIe slots for the addition of WiFi, GNSS, 4G, and Bluetooth.

Cincoze Announces New Thin Embedded Dual-purpose Computer – P1201 Series, Combining Performance and Flexibility

Rugged embedded computer brand—Cincoze, recently launched its latest addition to the Display Computing – CRYSTAL product line, the P1201 embedded computer series. The P1201 packs the improved computing performance of the Intel Elkhart Lake platform into a thin and light body (204.5 x 149 x 41.5 mm) with flexible expansion options. The highlight is the dual-purpose design sets the P1201 apart from other embedded computers. As standard, its ultra-thin design makes it  well-suited for data collection and analysis in space-limited applications in machine equipment and control cabinets. Attach one of a range of display modules to the P1201 using Cincoze’s exclusive CDS (Convertible Display System, Patent No. M482908) technology, and it becomes a panel PC suitable for HMI applications.

New Platform Double Performance

The P1201 uses the Elkhart Lake platform Intel® Atom® x6425E quad-core processor, delivering 1.7x the single-core performance and 1.5x the multi-core performance of the previous generation Apollo Lake processors. It also supports DDR4 memory up to 32 GB and 3200 MHz. The Intel® UHD graphics chip ensures smooth graphics by doubling the processing performance of previous generations. Greatly improved computing performance shortens processing times, thereby increasing work efficiency.

One Computer Two Purposes

The ingenuity of the P1201 lies in the “one computer, two purposes” design. On its own, it is an ultra-thin embedded computer suitable for installation in narrow spaces to perform long-term, uninterrupted computing tasks. By adding a display module through Cincoze’s exclusive CDS technology, the P1201 becomes a panel PC. According to the environment and application needs, three types of panel PC are available, including industrial panel PCs (CV-100/P1201), high brightness panel PCs (CS-100/P1201), and open frame panel PCs (CO-100/P1201), with each series offering a variety of sizes, display ratios, and touchscreen options.

Suitable for HMI and Mobile Robots

The P1201 is typically installed in equipment, control cabinets, and mobile robots, where vibration resistance and EMC are the main challenges. The P1201 passes a range of vibration and shock tests, including random vibration (5G), sinusoidal vibration (1.5G), and shock resistance (50G), meeting the EMC testing standards for harsh industrial environments (EN 61000-6-2 and EN 61000-6-4). The P1201’s high-standard, industrial-grade protections further ensure product safety by passing the UL certification for contact leakage, flammable materials, and rugged exterior.

Definition: What is a GPU?

The graphics processing unit (GPU) is the hardware component that takes instructions for visual display and puts the pixels on the screen where they are meant to go.

According to Intel, GPUs are designed for parallel processing and are, “used in a wide range of applications, including graphics and video rendering. Although they’re best known for their capabilities in gaming, GPUs are becoming more popular for use in creative production and artificial intelligence (AI).” 

That last part is important because the modern general-purpose GPU is no longer limited to just displaying images on the screen. It has become the powerhouse behind the processing of complex machine inputs that are possible but just too slow for the CPU. So how did this come about?

Withstands the Extremes

Outdoor environments are unpredictable, and exposure to dust, storms, thunderstorms, or severe temperature changes can wreak havoc with the system at any time. To ensure uninterrupted operation, the sunlight-readable panel PCs can withstand a temperature range of -20℃ to 70℃, and the front panel is waterproof and dustproof with an IP65 rating. The super-hard 7H touch surface is scratch-resistant and tough enough to withstand heavy impacts.

Cincoze Embedded Industrial Computers – At the Heart of Smart Security Monitoring

December 10, 2020 – Modern life is becoming more convenient as more smart devices join the  interconnected world. However, when everything is connected, security risks increase, and people have started to pay attention. Smart security monitoring falls roughly into two categories: mobile and fixed. Mobile applications in harsh in-vehicle environments must withstand long-term stress caused by constant vibration and temperature extremes in public safety vehicles such as police cars, ambulances and fire trucks, and public transportation such as trains and cruise ships and airplanes. Fixed monitoring encompasses indoor and outdoor applications such as central monitoring centers and traffic monitoring. Regardless of the environment, smart surveillance systems need to provide functions like image and object recognition, motion detection, and screen warnings to aid disaster response, traffic management, information collection, and data integration.

High-Speed IP Cameras for Smooth and Reliable Operation

Today’s high-speed wired IP cameras use Power-over-Ethernet, drawing power through existing network cabling, rather than requiring a separate power source. In the smart surveillance system architecture, multiple IP cameras connected simultaneously cause additional pressure on the network resulting in unstable image transmission and insufficient PoE power supply inhibiting normal operation. Cincoze DIAMOND series embedded industrial computers have built-in multiple IEEE802.3at PoE+ compatible ports, each rated up to 25.5 W, which can meet each high-speed IP camera’s power requirements and stably drive all connected terminal devices.

Fast Storage and Backup

Monitoring and analyzing incoming video streams is just the first step, recording, storing, and backing up the stored data is also required. Cincoze DIAMOND series embedded industrial computers support SSD, HDD, and mSATA storage options and feature a PCIe x4 NVMe SSD slot, which can transfer and access large amounts of data quickly. RAID options include RAID 0/1/5/10, providing the most effective, safe, repairable, and cost-effective storage. For quick access to emergency footage, the storage area is accessible from the front maintenance panel. Data is easy to collect, the system is easier to maintain, and plug-and-play is supported.

Ultimate Performance and Safety Certification

In addition to recording and playing video, smart surveillance systems also need to automatically analyze video content to detect people and objects in real-time to provide near-instantaneous alerts to react to incidents quickly. Cincoze DIAMOND series has options for 9/8th Gen Intel® Xeon® and Core™ CPUs to provide real-time analysis of images, rapid notification and warnings, and monitor on-site conditions. DIAMOND series is designed for wide temperature range of -40–70 ℃, shock resistance of 5/50 Grms, and has safety mechanisms such as electrostatic discharge, overcurrent, and overvoltage protection. Many models have EN 50155 (EN 50121-3-2 only) and E-Mark, with the double certification meeting the installation requirements in various vehicles and monitoring systems.

Cincoze DE-1000 Powers Train Carriage Passenger Information System


A state-owned railway company in northern Europe required a passenger information system (PIS) in its train carriages to deliver real-time passenger information, such as route details, arrival and departure times, and advertisements. The railway company wanted the PIS to engage with passengers and enhance their travel experience. They needed a rugged embedded PC as a media player because it offers flexible setup and more robust, more reliable operation than run-of-the-mill media players.

Network Connectivity and Multiple Display Options
The PIS architecture is multi-layered. The first layer is the automatic vehicle system that collects GPS data and connects to the LTE network. That vehicle system connects to a master embedded system (DE-1000) that controls eight client systems (DE-1000) installed in eight separate carriages. The master embedded system delivers content to the client computers through Ethernet with ruggedized M12 connectors that guarantee robust communications. Each client system connects to an ultra-wide bar LCD monitor in the carriage.

Low Power Consumption and Shock/Vibration Resistance
As the media players only display digital content, the customer chose our power-efficient DE-1000 for its low power consumption. Additionally, the computer must also withstand the shock and vibration in the rolling stock environment, and the rugged design of the DE-1000 delivers this requirement flawlessly.

The DE-1000 houses a wide variety of inputs and outputs and allows for additional expansion. Two Mini-PCIe slots (one with mSATA support) offer additional expansion options, including wireless LAN, 3G/LTE, GPS, and storage. Through Cincoze CMI and CFM expansion, the DE-1000 can support further I/O like 4 x LAN/M12 expansion (optional) and other functions, including power ignition and power over Ethernet (optional). High Reliability for Harsh Environments
Rolling stock is considered a harsh environment because of the shocks and constant vibration. To conquer this challenge, the DE-1000 has a unibody chassis, cable- and jumper-free, and integrated anti-vibration measures and supports operating temperatures from -25 to 70°C. The DE-1000 is EN 50121-3-2 certified for safety rolling stock standards, passing all stringent tests to ensure stable and reliable performance.

Sistim Tampilan Informasi Penerbangan – Flight information display system (FIDS) adalah sistem berbasis computer yang digunakan di bandar udara atau bisnis yang berhubungan dengan bandara seperti hotel, resor, dan convention center untuk menampilkan informasi kedatangan dan keberangkatan penerbangan secara actual (real-time).
Salah satu bandara tersibuk yang melayani puluhan juta penumpang per tahun, merencanakan untuk menerapkan FIDS baru diatas meja check-in, di ruang keberangkatan, dan ruang kedatangan, untuk memberikan pengalaman perjalanan yang lebih baik dan meningkatkan efisiensi pengoperasian bandara.

Permintaan Customer

Proyek ini memerlukan komputer berperforma tinggi untuk memproses banyak gambar resolusi tinggi, video iklan, dan data teks untuk ditampilkan secara langsung.  Komputer ini juga harus berukuran kecil dan dapat dipasang dengan berbagai metode untuk dihubungkan ke berbagai ukuran layar. Selain itu, komputer ini juga harus dapat tahan terhadap temperatur tinggi dalam ruang yang tertutup dan beroperasi secara efisien dengan mengkonsumsi daya yang rendah dan tanpa kipas untuk memastikan pelayanan 24 jam sehari dan 7 hari seminggu (24/7).
